Serangoon Stadium was the setting of a friendly training match between Northumberland Knights and guest on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
29 players were split up into 2 teams, the Black Knights (in black jersey) and the Red Knights (traditional team jersey), and after pre-match team talks by Blacks’ captain Ariff and Reds’ captain Haikal, the game got underway!
Despite wearing black under the hot sun, the Black Knights got into the groove early, and with Ahmat pulling the strings in the middle of the park, the Blacks midfield overran the Reds despite having a man lesser in the middle. Their smooth play and hard work were duly rewarded when strikers Aizal and Jowell combined well to score the Blacks’ first goal, a nicely placed goal finished by Jowell, sending Reds goalkeeper Donald the wrong way.
The goal clearly woke up the Reds and they started a flowing game of the own. Playmaker Alaudin typically pulling the strings for the Reds started a move combining with attackers Indra, Rammy and midfielder Kai with some good passing and rhythm. The move ended by Rammy equaling the scoreline. The goal had a fortunate element in it as the goalie spilled the ball, but as always, a goal is a goal. So that was how it ended during the first half, with both teams going into half time level at 1-1.
The second half wasn’t as exciting as the first because the heat and sandy middle of the pitch were taking effect on both teams. With the Black team having all the guest players, they played together really well, and despite only getting to know one another for awhile, they gelled together and held out for the rest of the game. They could have scored a goal in the last few minutes of the game when a long shot by Ahmat was saved by Reds goalie, Donald.
The match ended 1-1 which seems to be a fair result. Importantly, everyone went home happy and fitter. Kudos to all players involved who took time out to make their way down to Serangoon Stadium. Your presence is greatly appreciated.
